Ten years on from Tempo
Ethan from Exodus did the Tempo course 10 years ago. He shares the impact, a decade later.
10 years ago, Ethan had just started a new role at Exodus, a youth ministry organisation in Ireland. He felt overwhelmed by the scale of his role, managing large numbers of volunteers across the North-East and North-West of Ireland.
His manager at the time suggested the Tempo Leadership course could help. Rachel, Innovista’s North-West based trainer, walked with Ethan through his challenges.
A decade later, Ethan is still using what he learned though Tempo.
“Innovista offered me support when it was really needed. Rachel listened and asked the right questions. I felt valued.
It helped me appreciate the value of strategy. My previous role had been in a church where the attitude towards strategy was ‘let go and let God’ so it was a real shift in thinking. At the time it felt groundbreaking.”
Ethan’s line manager noticed a difference. Across the 10 months that it took to complete Tempo, he grew in character and skill.

What about now?
10 years later, Ethan’s role and Exodus have grown. He now leads a team of 3 full-time staff, 5 interns and dozens of volunteers.
Today, Ethan is still using the practical tools that Tempo equipped him with. One Tempo workshop teaches leaders to analyse a challenge they’re facing. Leaders are shown how to find the one thing they can do which would have the greatest impact in tackling that challenge.
Change one thing
Ethan put this into practice this year. Exodus runs a mentoring programme and a discipleship programme which both start in September.
As these mentoring and discipleship programmes grew, each year felt busier. By February, the Exodus team was overwhelmed and burnt out after 6 hectic months.
The one thing Ethan determined would make the greatest difference to the team was the workload of these programmes. So he changed things.
Now, mentoring is part of the discipleship journey. The team’s workload feels more manageable, and young people are benefiting from the best of both programmes.
